چکیده

S U M M A R Y The Crandall Canyon Mine, Utah, collapse in 2007 August resulted in a total of nine fatalities. We processed data from the ALOS satellite acquired before and after the collapse to quantify surface subsidence associated with the collapse to better understand the collapse process. The deformation shows a steep V-shaped pattern of subsidence with slight asymmetry. We compare the fit of four different models that simulate the subsidence pattern. The first two models use elastic half-space rheology. We find that collapse alone cannot explain the observations, and a component of normal faulting is required to fit the data. The second set of models simulates collapse in elasto-plastic media. Only a small component of normal faulting is required in these models. We suggest that considering elasto-plastic material behaviour is particularly important for shallow deformation modelling, where microfractures and other non-elastic rheology are common. Disregarding this material behaviour can lead to biased model parameter estimates.

Characterizing 6 August 2007 Crandall Canyon mine collapse from ALOS PALSAR InSAR

We used ALOS InSAR images to study land surface deformation over the Crandall Canyon mine in Utah, which collapsed on 6 August 2007 and killed six miners. The collapse was registered as a ML 3.9 seismic event. An InSAR image spanning the time of the collapse shows 25–30 cm surface subsidence over the mine. We used distributed dislocation sources to model the deformation field, and found that a ...

Differential Radar Interferometry for Mine Subsidence Monitoring

The history of mining disasters includes cases of subsidence and collapse into workings, and also a number of inrushes into underground mines, where deficiencies in surveying, or in maintenance and interpretation of plans, were prime factors. The most recent incident in Australia was at the Gretley Colliery in NSW, in 1996. The most recent such incident in the USA was at the Quecreek Mine in So...

Modeling Collapse Chimney and Spall Zone Settlement as a Source of Post-shot Subsidence Detected by Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry

Ground surface subsidence resulting from the March 1992 JUNCTION underground nuclear test at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) imaged by satellite synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) wholly occurred during a period of several months after the shot (Vincent et al., 1999) and after the main cavity collapse event. A significant portion of the subsidence associated with the small (less than 20...

Mine Subsidence Monitoring by JERS-1 SAR Interferometry

Differential SAR Interferometry (D-InSAR) is an effective tool in monitoring land subsidence because of its greater coverage area and better resolution of height change. A series of Japanese Earth Resources Satallite-1 (JERS-1) images from 1992 to 1998 has been used in monitoring the mine subsidence in the test site of this study, one of the important coal mining areas in China. D-InSAR procedu...

Monitoring subsidence effects in the urban area of Zonguldak Hardcoal Basin of Turkey by InSAR-GIS integration

Zonguldak Hardcoal Basin is the largest bituminous coal region in Turkey where extensive underground mining activity exists. Because of this activity subsidence effects have been experienced in different locations of the city. In this study, surface deformations caused by the subsidence have been observed by D-InSAR technique using C-Band RADARSAT data. InSAR data process of 16 RADARSAT images ...
